Kick-feeding is a technique of feeding in humpback whales that appears to be unique to our whales here in the Gulf of Maine. It was first observed in the mid 1980's and has increased in the population since then. Once the whale encounters a school of baitfish, the whale slams its tail on the surface of the water to corral the fish into a tighter ball.
