By the time they started producing hand planes in 1929, enamel paints had become durable enough to serve the purpose. Almost all manufactures started using paint instead of japanning in the coming years.

While there may be as many ways to restore an old plane as there are woodworkers to attempt it, we've had success with relatively simple methods for returning a vintage plane to its former utility and good looks.

Oct 15, 2014 · Wooden planes can be the quickest hand planes to restore, although you'll want to start out with a good candidate. If you're restoring a hand plane for roughing work then old wooden jack's can be picked up very cheaply, and for the heavy work you don't need to worry about a wide mouth.

I wanted to give electrolysis a try, so I snagged an old laptop power brick from work and managed to get a decent setup going, with two pieces of rebar as anodes -- works great.
