Welding on a couple strips of 1" wide x 3/16" thick stock got it past inspection for that year. Two years later there were holes opening up around the previous repairs.

If its all rusted like those pictures show I would double check the frame for more damage, or soon to be damage (cracks etc.) If the rest of it checks out then I agree, for a daily driver take it to a shop with a machine.

If you want an inside the frame rail type box that has more drop and a side to side style arm on it for crossover, build the rails a little wider.
