The Red Tail Squadron, part of the non-profit Commemorative Air Force (CAF), known as the Red Tail Project until June 2011, maintains and flies a World War II era North American P-51C Mustang.

The red markings that distinguished the Tuskegee Airmen included red bands on the noses of P-51s as well as a red empennage; the P-51B, C and D Mustangs flew with similar color schemes, with red propeller spinners, yellow wing bands and all-red tail surfaces.

Mar 21, 2016 · A restored P-51 “Red Tail” named Tuskegee Airmen in a 2009 photo. After flying instruction, advanced students went on to learn fighters. Pilot production continued throughout the war, eventually training 685 fighter pilots and 245 bomber pilots.

The P-51 Mustang was a long-range fighter that could escort heavy bombers to Berlin and back. The Museum's P-51 has the markings of the Tuskegee "Red Tails."

The CAF Red Tail Squadron’s RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit and P-51C Mustang travel 9 months out of the year, crisscrossing the country to deliver the inspirational message of the courage, strength and character of the Tuskegee Airmen, America’s first black military pilots and their support personnel.

Their vision was to restore a P-51C Mustang as a vehicle to spark conversations and educate young and old alike about the often-overlooked history of the Tuskegee Airmen. The CAF Minnesota Wing dubbed the initial restoration the “Red Tail Project” and raised more than $500,000 to complete the work.
