Dec 22, 2017 · Today my TV a LG 47LM669S stopped responding to the remote control and also the physical buttons weren't responding. After a while I couldn't turn on the TV anymore. I disassembled it and took the physical buttons board out and now it seems to be working again with the remote.

Nov 25, 2012 · In the '70s dad bought a TV with a remote control. It had two buttons. (Yes, young’un; two.) Top button: Press once to turn the TV on. Press a second time to increase the volume. Press a third time to increase the volume again. Press a fourth time to turn the TV off. The other button advanced the channel.

If the on/off (or other button) on the set itself behaves erratically but the remote control works fine, then it could be a dirty button or cable or other connections to the switch PCB, particularly if the buttons on the set itself are rarely used.
