Chinese is a tonal language. 'Mao1' for cat and 'Mao2' for Mao Zedong sound completely different. The sound for 'meow' in mandarin is 'miao', which sounds very similar to the word in English but sounds reasonably different from 'mao1'. Maybe the word for cat was based on their sound, but this is probably prehistory.

They said we could keep her around. Her actual name was Donder (Dutch for thunder) but my brother called her Mao Zedong as a joke. By the time we registered her she already listened to Mao better than Donder. So we decided to officially name her Mao Zedong. The vet was giving me rather Strange looks as i said her name was Mao Zedong.🤣
