Calypso Deep is the deepest point in the Mediterranean Sea, located in the Hellenic Trench in the Ionian Sea, 62.6 km south-west of Pylos, Greece, with a maximum depth of approximately 5,200 m (17,100 ft). [1]

The Hellenic Trench (HT) is an oceanic trough located in the forearc of the Hellenic arc, an arcuate archipelago on the southern margin of the Aegean Sea plate, or Aegean Plate, also called Aegea, the basement of the Aegean Sea.

The second phase of Caladan Oceanic’s 2020 Expedition programme saw the crew travel to the Hellenic Trench on the eastern side of the Mediterranean Sea. In only the second manned visitation to its deepest point, Victor Vescovo and Prince Albert II of Monaco reached a newly calculated depth for the deep of 5,109 meters (+/- 1 meter).
