Most exhaust manifold gaskets either come with their own sealant (like Fel-Pro's do with the silver looking stuff), or they are metal and don't require it either. I believe sealants (such as high temp Permatex Copper) will just burn off anyway, because the heat at the head/header interface is far beyond what they can take.

Exhaust leak despite tightening the flange all the way
The issue is there is an exhaust leak that I can't seem to fix. I tightened the flange all the way around and it still leaks. It only leaks from one side and at first it leaked from below the pipe but after flipping the gasket and re-tightening it now leaks from above. I tried to buy a new gasket and had the same issue.

Jun 27, 2002 · also, I had a pinhole leak at the same place and I fixed it by using spray-on copper gasket sealer. (It may actually be used instead of a gasket, I can't remember, but I got it at autozone and it works great). I am using a 3-layer metal gasket at that flange as well.

Oct 28, 2023 · Leaking exhaust manifolds are serious, as the exhaust fumes could leak into the passenger compartement. A bandaid in form of putty won't stop the leak. With a bit of luck you only need a new gasket. Otherwise the manifold is cracked and needs to be welded (since it is cast iron you will need a professional welder) or replaced (ask at a scrapyard).
