They have a slightly larger toslink connector so fit very tightly in most equipment and will definitely stop any slippage. I tried to do this with my original Sky box, but unfortunately the optical output stayed on when the box was in standby. I'm not sure how the Sky+ box behaves. I think you can get devices that convert from optical to co-ax, if that's any use.
