The CSE Manual presents 3 systems for referring to references (also known as citations) within the text of a journal article, book, or other scientific publication: (1) citation–sequence, (2) name–year, and (3) citation–name. These abbreviated references are called in-text references.

To help you use the CSE style when citing sources, this library guide provides sample citations for books, articles, and other scientific works. The Council of Science Editors (CSE), formerly known as Council of Biology Editors (CBE), published the 8th edition of the CSE style manual in 2014.
