Burr cells and spur cells are two types of red blood cells that can be distinguished by their surface projections. Burr cells, or echinocytes, have multiple smaller projections that are uniformly distributed throughout the cell surface. Spur cells, or acanthocytes, have fewer spicules than Burr cells, and the spicules vary more in size than echinocytes. Spur cells are often confused with Burr cells, but they are characterized by diminished deformability, which is responsible for their entrapment and destruction in the spleen.
