I have and use Blu Ray to create long term backups and while you will get a lot of people that say otherwise, in 10 years of archiving I have had many hard disk drives fail, but no properly checked Blu Ray backups fail (and yes I do check them). In my experience, even with M Discs (I use 100GB discs), keep them at room temperature if possible.

The discs that failed overwhelmingly did so due to bad handling (scratches), rather than storage or age. CD-R were terrible for long term data storage, the data layer was very close to the label side and had almost no protection to speak of, and they still survived largely fine thanks to the approach I describe below.

Oct 18, 2022 · A hard drive for cold storage has the advantage of being cheap, dense (In terms of square inches per GB) and fast to write and read. But those are the only advantages. For everything else, namely durability and being WORM, BluRay wins. It's really down to how important the data is, how much you have to store, and how much you're willing to pay.
