Afro-Panamanians can be found in the towns and cities of Colón, Cristóbal and Balboa, the Río Abajo area of Panama City, the Canal Zone and the province of Bocas del Toro. [1] The first Africans to arrive in Panama came with Vasco Núñez de Balboa, in 1513.

Afro culture is so alive in Panama that more than 30% of the population proudly identifies as Afro-descendant. The Afro-Panamanian community is concentrated mainly in coastal and urban regions, such as Panama City and the provinces of Bocas del Toro and Colón.

Panamanian nationalism attempts to co-opt black people born in Panama while encouraging or coercing Afro-Caribbeans to identify with Hispanic values. Panamanians often distinguish between Caribbean black people (antillanos) and those who predate the Caribbean migrations (negros nativos).

Afro Panamanians continued life at the bottom of the racial caste system, with white Panamanians at the top. Mulattoes and Mestizos claimed Hispanic heritage and indigenous Panamanians were above blacks in the caste system.
