St. Joseph Parish traces its history to 1875 when the request was made to Bishop Peter Baltes to establish a new parish on the north side of the city of Springfield. Local industry was bringing a growing residential population into the area.

All are invited to a Mass on the Feast of St. Joseph, March 19, 2025 for all alumni, faculty and staff, living and deceased, of Pittsfield’s St. Joseph Central High School. The Mass will take place in St. Joseph’s Church, 414 North St. at 5:30 p.m.

The first St. Joseph Church was the third Catholic Church to be established in Springfield. The first Mass was celebrated in the beautiful Gothic structure on Christmas Day, 1877. Father Manasses Kane was the first Pastor assigned by Bishop Peter Baltes of Alton.
