It was a secondary battlefield weapon for the Greek armies after the dory or javelin. The classic blade was generally about 45–60 cm (18–24 in) long, although the Spartans supposedly preferred to use blades as short as 30 cm (12 in) around the era of the Greco-Persian Wars. This article will look at four Spartan weapons, their spear, two swords and their shield. The spear was the main weapon of any Greek warrior. Fighting in a phalanx (see Greek warriors for more information), Spartan warriors presented their enemies with spear tips from densely packed rows.

The Spartan weapons were few but legendary, from the Spartan sword the Xiphos, to the Spartan shield that could be used as a weapon, the Apsis. The Spartans also used other weapons like the Dory and the Kopis depending on their position on the battlefield.
