Quentin Roosevelt (November 19, 1897 – July 14, 1918) was the youngest son of President Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Roosevelt. Inspired by his father and siblings, he joined the United States Army Air Service where he became a pursuit pilot during World War I and shot down one German aircraft. [1] .

This black and white photograph shows airplane wreckage that the photographer thought was from Quentin Roosevelt's crash. The photo was enclosed in a letter from George L. Olson to Edith Kermit Carow Roosevelt in 1924.

On July 14, 1918, he was shot down behind German lines by Sgt. Thom, a German ace with 24 victories. Roosevelt's Nieuport 28 crashed at Chamery near Coulonges-en-Tardenois and his body was buried by the Germans at the crash site.

A memorial stone at the site of the original burial of Quentin Roosevelt. He was shot down here on 14 July 1918 and was buried here by the Germans. His family later installed an elaborate tombsite.

Oct 29, 2007 · An honor guard of about a thousand Germans paid their respects at Roosevelt’s crash site, where his Nieuport’s wheels and propeller were used to mark his grave, along with a wooden cross with the words: “Lieutenant Roosevelt, buried by the Germans.”
