The North Dakota Highway Patrol emblem is a profile of Marcellus Red Tomahawk, a Teton Dakotah (Sioux) Indian who served as a government police officer in the early years of North Dakota’s statehood. Red Tomahawk, a subchief, encouraged harmony among all Americans, native and immigrant.

North Dakota is represented by many important symbols that help tell the story of the state. Since 1889, more than 15 state symbols have been officially recognized and adopted by the North Dakota Legislative Assembly to show respect and admiration for North Dakota.

The flag of North Dakota represents the U.S. state of North Dakota. Adopted on March 11, 1911, its design is an almost exact replica of the regimental banner carried by the state's troop contingent in the Philippine–American War, the only difference being that the unit designation inscribed on the scroll was replaced by the state's name.
