The coronation of George IV as king of the United Kingdom took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 19 July 1821.

George IV’s coronation was held on July 19, 1821, and it is was perhaps the most expensive in British history. The king reportedly wanted a service to rival that of Napoleon. The result was an extravagant ceremony that included a crown with 12,000 diamonds; the banquet served more than 2,000 people.

The plates, engraved from originals by the brothers James (1789-1874) and Francis Stephanoff (1790-1860), were later republished by Henry Bohn in Sir George Nayler's Coronation of His Most Sacred Majesty King George the Fourth, published posthumously in 1837.

This is the coronation portrait of George IV painted in 1821 and recording the extraordinary robes designed by the King himself. It was painted to hang in the throne room at St James’s Palace, between the battle scenes of George Jones (RCIN 407186-7), where it hangs to this day.

In 1829, George IV was forced by his ministers, much against his will and his interpretation of his coronation oath, to agree to Catholic Emancipation. By reducing religious discrimination, this emancipation enabled the monarchy to play a more national role.
