Sep 3, 2013 · After several years of discussing the concept of a live Owl to serve as the official mascot of Kennesaw State, the decision to move forward was finally made last spring. The live owl adopted by KSU was born April 8, 2013 in New York.

Jun 30, 2009 · In 1996 Mr. Bill Malone and then athletic director Dr. Dave Waples designed "Scrappy" the mascot, battle-ready bird wearing sneakers and an Owls jersey whose "thumbs up" pose signifies the success of Kennesaw State athletics.

The school mascot is Scrappy the Owl. Kennesaw State's athletic department was founded in 1983, and initially offered nine sports: women's basketball, men's soccer, men's & women's cross country, and men's & women's track and field.

KENNESAW, Ga. (October 19, 2013) – Following a vote of nearly 1,300 respondents, the first-ever Kennesaw State University live owl will be known as "Sturgis", named after Horace Sturgis who served as the institution's first president.

Nov 19, 2018 · An owl representing athletics was briefly called Hooter, but that name did not last. At one point, the mascot was known as KaSCey to honor the Kennesaw State College name. For the early incarnation of the mascot, the bird was similar to a University of Kansas Jayhawk.

Nov 30, 2023 · In 2010, Kennesaw State unveiled a new mascot called Pounce the Owl, an anthropomorphized owl costume aimed at making the mascot more child-friendly. Pounce upset KSU students and alumni who felt the cartoonish mascot didn’t represent the school’s values well.
