Padmasambhava ("Born from a Lotus"), [note 2] also known as Guru Rinpoche (Precious Guru), was a semi-legendary [1] tantric Buddhist Vajra master from India who fully revealed the Vajrayana in Tibet, circa 8th – 9th centuries.

Guru Rinpoche Padmasambhava is the Lotus Born Tantric Buddha who established Vajrayana Buddhism in Tibet in the 9th century upon the invitation of Chögyal Trisong Détsen. Ngak’chang Rinpoche comments:

Padmasambhava, an emanation of The Buddha Amitaba, was a great yogi from the region that borders on present-day Pakistan and Afghanistan. He brought Buddhism to Tibet in the eighth century and is affectionately called Guru Rinpoche.

Through his miraculous power, Guru Rinpoche journeyed throughout the entire land of Tibet and blessed all the mountains, lakes and caves as places for accomplishment. With Yeshe Tsogyal, he performed sadhanas, gave blessings and left signs of enlightened body speech and mind for future generations.

What was Guru Rinpoche’s advice to his beloved consort disciple Lady Tsogyal on how to achieve enlightenment in this very lifetime? Seclusion, discipline, hard work, and the guru are among the most important.

Padmasambhava, also known as Guru Rinpoche (Precious Teacher) and Lotus-Born, stands as a towering figure in Tibetan Buddhism. His life and Wirken (activities) are shrouded in an aura of mystery, with legend and history intertwining to paint a portrait of a remarkable individual who irrevocably transformed the religious landscape of the Himalayas.

The Seven-Line prayer to Guru Rinpoche is one of the most ubiquitous and important prayers for Tibetan Buddhists, performed across lineages and in particular the Nyingma tradition who commence nearly every practice with it and for which there are dedicated sadhanas based on it.

At thirteen different places called Tiger’s Lair, Taktsang, Guru Rinpoche manifested in “the terrifying wrathful form of crazy wisdom”, binding worldly spirits under oath to protect the terma treasures and serve the Dharma.
