Jun 24, 2024 · A wave of shock and sadness has swept over Hawaii and the surf world at large, as news that Tamayo Perry, Pipeline specialist, was killed by a shark on June 23rd. Perry was surfing Goat Island off Oahu’s east side at the time of the attack; he was 49 years old.

The inner vegetated areas of the island are off-limits--protected habitat for birds. Eggs in nests were clearly visible. Walking the perimeter of the island gives me a glimpse of how life emerged from volcanic land masses. Most of the time you can be alone on the island, and often there are no other footprints in the sand but your own.

Goat Island, also known as Mokuʻauia, is a flat islet consisting of lithified dunes in Laie Bay on the northeast shore of Oahu, Hawaii. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] The islet is separated from Malaekahana State Recreation Area by a 720 feet (220 m) channel of limestone reef shelf 1 metre (3.3 ft) underwater.
