Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old democratic socialist of Indian-origin, is gaining momentum in the New York City mayoral race. With support from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, his progressive proposals and viral social media presence are making waves in the contest against former Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Zohran was elected to the New York State Assembly for the 36th District in 2020, becoming the first South Asian man, the first Ugandan, and the third Muslim to hold that position.
