A serious bacterial infection has put a North Carolina man in an Outer Banks ICU, highlighting a growing concern over the flesh-eating bacteria found in coastal waters.

Eight people have died in the U.S. this year in Florida and Louisiana from infections with Vibrio vulnificus, a "flesh-eating" bacteria that spreads through seawater and shellfish.
