A senior Hamas official has defended carrying out the deadly October 7 attacks on Israel, telling CNN that it created a “golden moment” for the Palestinian cause despite the tens of thousands of deaths in Gaza.

Hamas has been able to use its Oct. 7, 2023 attacks on Israel to mobilize a global trend of antisemitism and even Palestinian statehood.

An estimated 1 million Palestinians were living in the Gaza City region before warnings to evacuate began ahead of the offensive. The Israeli military estimates 350,000 people have left the city. The U.N. estimates that more than 238,000 Palestinians have fled northern Gaza over the past month. Hundreds of thousands more have stayed behind.

The fast-moving diplomatic events are mostly symbolic, but the resentment across Israel’s political class shows how isolated the Jewish state has become two years into its war with Hamas.

They are among the hundreds of thousands of civilians who have fled Gaza City since Israel launched a new offensive last week. Israel dropped leaflets and posted on social media to warn civilians to move south. Israeli officials claim Gaza City contains about 3,000 Hamas fighters and is the group’s last major stronghold.

President Donald Trump condemned France, U.K., Australia and Canada for recognizing a Palestinian state, saying it encourages continued conflict and emboldens Hamas after Oct. 7 attacks.
