Philadelphia's host city executive for the 2026 World Cup says organizers accept that an immigration crackdown by the U.S. federal government may be among the outside events that impact next year's tournament.
The Council made reference to concerns about whether the police had violated New York’s sanctuary laws by sharing information with federal authorities.
“People are seeing that ICE is invading their communities,” says David Chung, an organizer with the People’s Forum. “They’re seeing that ICE is spending all of these resources that they claim that immigrants are taking and they’re ready to stand up and fight back.”
Immigration protests across the country and the Trump administration's response to the Los Angeles immigration protests has become a major focus of the New York City mayoral campaign. About 4,000 National Guard troops have been deployed to California and the defense department is activating 700 Marines as demonstrations continue over ICE raids in California.
