Education Secretary Linda McMahon put California and Gov. Gavin Newsom, on notice on Wednesday as it found the state to be in violation of Title IX.
Title IX is a 1972 law forbidding sex discrimination based in education. California education and sports officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment Wednesday.
The U.S. Department of Education says California violated the civil rights of students by allowing transgender students to compete in school sports according to their gender identity.
