Democrat Adelita Grijalva and Republican Daniel Butierez dominated a field of congressional hopefuls Tuesday night to get one step closer to representing a wide swath of southern Arizona in Congress.

Adelita Grijalva, daughter of the late Congressman Raúl Grijalva, won Tuesday's Democratic primary in the special election to replace her father, and will advance to this fall’s general election.

For the second time in less than a year, Arizona business owner Dan Butierez will be facing a member of the Grijalva family in a U.S. congressional election.

Grijalva's daughter is the presumptive frontrunner in the 7th Congressional District's July 15 Democratic primary.

While Tuesday's special election in Arizona may not seem like the type of story to generate nationwide headlines, the race is getting eyes across the country for boiling down the current state of the Democratic Party into a single election.
