A Magnitude 5.9 earthquake rumbled off the Oregon Coast at 11:45 p.m. Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The relatively large temblor, taking place some 230 miles west of Bandon, was followed by another, possibly related Magnitude 3.0 quake nearby in the Pacific Ocean.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, a 2.1 magnitude quake struck close to Petrolia Saturday morning. It was reported that a tremor shook the region at 7:43 a.m. The epicenter was situated approximately 15 miles northwest of Petrolia, at a depth of 13 miles. Seismologists first reported it as a 1.8 event, but later upgraded it to 2.1.

A 4.3-magnitude earthquake was strong enough to rattle nerves in the middle of the night, especially in the heavily populated East Bay where it was centered.

Last winter, the magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck miles off the California coast, prompting tsunami warnings for coastal regions and setting off aftershocks. This quake occurred in a highly active area where three tectonic plates converge, sometimes called the Mendocino Triple Junction .
