The Federal Trade Commission announced the settlement days into a trial over a lawsuit accusing Amazon of tricking consumers into automatically enrolling into Prime and making it tough to cancel their subscriptions.

Amazon has reached a historic $2.5bn (£1.9bn) settlement with a US business watchdog over allegations it tricked customers into signing up for Prime membership.

The settlement includes $1 billion in penalties and $1.5 billion in payouts to customers, who could get $51 each if they qualify.
