New York City woke up to its first white Christmas in 15 years. But only a few areas of the U.S. are likely to see snow in the weather forecast for Christmas 2024.

Christmas 2022, 53% of the Lower 48 experienced a white Christmas, the highest percentage since 2009. Much of the West, Midwest and interior Northeast were covered in snow.

New York City could see its first white Christmas in 15 years. One inch of snow fell in Central Park on Christmas Eve morning, but it’s not clear if it’ll melt before Christmas Day.

It need not snow on Dec. 25 to fit the weather service's definition of a white Christmas, but some flurries would certainly help put folks in the holiday spirit.

The last time it snowed on Christmas was in 2017, when Boston got 2.9 inches. Not much, but the record snowfall for a Christmas in Boston is only 3.3 inches.

A “fair” chance of a white Christmas is expected throughout the northern U.S., from New York to North Dakota, as well as the northern Central Plains and parts of the southwest.
