An effort to end child marriage in the United States has gained steam in recent years. In 2018, Delaware became the first state to do so, with 11 other states following suit.
These 12 states have so far made child marriage illegal: Connecticut, Delaware, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and Washington.
Child marriage is defined as any marriage where at least one of the parties is under the age of 18. It was legal in all 50 states until 2018. Ten states have since passed bans to end the practice.
