Union Pacific and Norfolk Southern confirmed Thursday that they are in merger talks that would create a single U.S railroad with service stretching from the East to the West Coast.

Railroad operator Union Pacific missed Wall Street estimates for first-quarter profit and revenue on Thursday, hurt by weak automotive shipments and lower fuel surcharge, sending its shares down 3%.
