Forecasters say Tropical Storm Erin, which formed in the eastern Atlantic Ocean on Monday, is expected to become the Atlantic's first hurricane of the season. The storm formed just west of the Cabo Verde islands, off the western coast of Africa, and was moving west, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said.

“Tropical Storm Erin continues to move westerly through the Atlantic. Still over 1,900 miles away from the Leeward Islands. It is TOO EARLY to determine what, if any, impacts (will be) across West Central Florida,” the office wrote in a post on X Tuesday.

Erin will head toward warmer waters in the coming days, allowing it to strengthen into a hurricane late this week.
