Asters are the stars of our September gardens, and indeed the word aster means ‘star'. The individual daisy-like blooms in the clustered flowered heads look star-like.
Many make good cut flowers. They range from the ‘Monte Cassino,’ 3 feet tall with bright white flowers, to ‘Ringdove,’ a most delicate light pink aster that’s 2 feet tall.
The brilliant purple flowers that appear in pastures and abandoned old fields in central Indiana belong to tall ironweed (Vernonia gigantea).
The flowers are also a good source of late-season pollen and nectar for bees and butterflies. Asters make good cut flowers. * Size: Grows 26 to 30 inches tall with a three-foot spread.
