SMITHTOWN, N.Y.-- St. Catherine of Siena Hospital on Long Island is closing its maternity ward at the end of the month. Nurses and patients said it's a devastating blow to the Smithtown community.

The union won a contract in June at Catholic Health’s St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson, with nurses securing a 20.5% pay bump over three years and contractual nurse-to-patient ratios.

St. Catherine of Siena Hospital in Smithtown will lose its OB-GYN doctors and plans to close its maternity services program on Feb. 1, according to Catholic Health, which operates the hospital.
