Chicago South Shore and South Bend Railroad are looking at rezoning property they've owned since 2007 for any future expansion. This is a project with South Shore Freight.

The Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad operates 127 miles of rail line between South Bend. It handles rail freight between Chicago and South Bend and Chicago and Kingsbury in LaPorte County.

The South Shore has fares for one way, 10 or 25 rides, or monthly. Reduced-price fares are available for senior citizens, active duty military, children under 13, and riders with disabilities.

But Noland says the railroad also needs to show it’s doing its part. He says the 10% increase is reasonable with the South Shore Line providing, what he says, is significantly enhanced service.

Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District General Manager Gerry Hanas said he has proposed a rate hike of 2 percent in 2006 and another 2 percent in 2007 for the South Shore Railroad.
