Millions of birds, such as the snow geese, which spend their summers in the arctic circle, use the flyway to move southward during winter and back north as the weather warms up.

With migrating snow geese about to arrive, parts of Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area are closed off to the public out of caution for humans’ and domestic animals’ health.

This year’s was the biggest migration of snow geese in the last three winters, Portner said, topping out at around 100,000 on Feb. 18. “It was a colder winter,” he said.
