It’s not completely impossible for the night sky to deliver impressive imagery on a budget though, as [David Schneider] shows us with a Raspberry Pi powered whole sky camera.
A wide-angle lens that can shoot at f/2.8 or faster. A sturdy tripod. (Mine is made of carbon fiber.) A tracking mount like the Sky-Watcher Star Adventurer or the Move Shoot Move rotator.
This particular model is more suited for wide-angle astrophotography as opposed to deep-sky astrophotography, for which a separate counterweight accessory would need to be purchased.
It needs to be a wide-angle, in order to capture as much of the sky as possible, and so you're looking at 14-20mm on a full-frame camera, 1-14mm on APS-C, or 7-10mm on Micro Four Thirds.
