Tesla boss Elon Musk appears to be on the verge of making his robotaxi vision a reality with a test run of a small squad of self-driving cabs in Austin, Texas, that began Sunday. However, for the moment, it is just a small fleet of around 10 vehicles.

Driverless Waymo taxis, owned by Google’s parent company, regularly drop off diners at Austin’s famous barbecue joints. Box-shaped, four-wheeled robots operated by Avride, a start-up working with Uber Eats, deliver Thai takeout to customers downtown. Zoox, owned by Amazon, and Volkswagen are separately testing autonomous taxis here.

Austin, Texas, a city known for its tech-forward culture and vibrant innovation scene, has become the launchpad for Tesla’s bold leap into the future of transportation.
