The heads of both Joseph and Jesus split from their bodies. The vandalized statue -- which the church valued at $15,000 -- was discovered face-down on the sidewalk at 9:50 a.m.

Standing beside his bed is a youthful-looking Jesus, perhaps 16 or 17 years old, beardless, wearing a long tunic, eyes trained intently on Joseph. Sitting by the bed is Mary.

St. Joseph was the most chaste spouse of Mary and he along with his wife did not abdicate their authority that was theirs as parents of Jesus and “ . . . and he was obedient to them” (Luke 2:51).

St. Joseph’s presence within the Gospels is one of protection, of honor, of duty, of care, and ultimately, of deep love for the Lord Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.

St. Joseph’s work was “an expression of love for Jesus and Mary” as it was when he prayed with and conversed with them. And he helped his son be part of the providing too.

In a video message the archbishop said that Saint Joseph contributed to God's work by taking care of Mary and the child Jesus. The father's role is important in every family.
