The Detroit Zoo announced on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, that beloved Bactrian camel Rusty was compassionately euthanized last week. He had been with the zoo since 2009. Photo used with permission.

Rusty the red panda escaped his National Zoo enclosure and was briefly free in Washington, D.C., in 2013. He has died at age 10 of unknown causes.
