California’s high school track-and-field state finals drew protestors after awarding one extra medal in events where a transgender athlete finishes in the top three, a rule change that may be the first of its kind nationally by a high school sports governing body.

AB Hernandez shared first place in the high jump and triple jump in the California high school championship, and shared spots on the awards podium, too.

The new California Interscholastic Federation announced the new policy earlier this week in response to Hernandez’s success.
