The "Kit Car" name, with its unfortunate connotation of a fiberglass body on a used chassis, probably did little to help. Another hurdle was the Volare's growing reputation for poor quality.

While the Volare was quite popular at the time, the Road Runner version wasn't. Of the one million Volares delivered through 1980, only 18,719 rolled off the assembly line in Road Runner specs.
