The swamp itself includes both a Georgia state park, Stephen C. Foster, and the federally managed Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, which covers more than 350,000 acres.

The swamp is also home to hundreds of kinds of plants and animals, including threatened and endangered species like the red-cockaded woodpecker, indigo snake and wood stork.

The Okefenokee refuge covers nearly 630 square miles (1,630 square kilometers) in southeast Georgia and is home to more than 400 animal species, including alligators and bald eagles.
