The Indian Air Force will decommission its last MiG-21 jets on September 19, ending a 62-year era, amid safety concerns and a transition to LCA Mk-1A fighters.

Although the MiG-21’s operational life was considered long over, the Air Force continued extending the fleet’s service due to delays in acquiring sufficient modern fighter jets.

First inducted in 1963, MiG 21 will be retired after 62 years of service with the indigenously developed Tejas aircraft replacing it in all the current squardrons.
