The memorial will be built in Statler Park, just one block from where the nightclub stood. To this day, it is not known exactly how the fire began. Locked doors prevented many from getting out.

A memorial is being built to recognize the 492 people killed in the Cocoanut Grove nightclub fire. On Nov. 28, 1942, six of the club's nine doors were locked which prevented patrons from escaping.
