A former police officer and ex-professional baseball player is being hailed as a hero after he drowned while saving swimmers from a rip current off the coast of South Carolina.

Chase Childers, 38, drowned on South Carolina’s Pawleys Island while attempting to help 4-5 individuals who were in distress.

Childers and a good Samaritan helped the swimmers, identified as a family of five, return safely to shore at the popular vacation spot, 26 miles from Myrtle Beach.
