Thanks to the Mirrorpix archives, photographs chronicling this time of dramatic change survive. They show the streets in Greater Manchester on the brink of demolition but still home to many families.

Coinciding with the Manchester to London Euston line electrification, Oxford Road's old buildings were demolished, and the station rebuilt, opening on September 12, 1960.
