Opponents say the Ten Commandments and prayer measures infringe on others’ religious freedom, and more lawsuits are expected. The American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the Freedom From Religion Foundation have said they will file lawsuits opposing the Ten Commandments measure.

With the signing of Senate Bill 10, Texas becomes the second state to require the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms. Federal courts have already weighed in on a nearly identical Louisiana law.

A federal court ruled against a Louisiana law requiring public schools and colleges in the state to display the Ten Commandments. A similar law recently passed the Texas Legislature.
