The city of Shasta Lake will soon open its new skatepark, part of a bigger push by the community to add new park features, playgrounds and other recreation spaces where people can play outdoors.

On Saturday, nearly 1,500 people helped celebrate the opening of the 14,000-square-foot Ralphs Skate Park, named after the Ralphs grocery chain, which donated $100,000 to the $750,000 project.

Dozens of other skateboarders — mostly men in their 50s and 60s decked out in skating gear — roll along the periphery, watching on, at Encinitas Skate Park near San Diego.
